Skagen is a family of 7 styles including two condensed styles specially developed to feature different numbers formats perfectly on a clock face. The letterforms have a strong relation to Danish design tradition and details tell the story of their brand origin, the seaside village of Skagen. Research in archives, investigating the works of Danish icons such as Claus Achton Friis and Knud V. Engelhardt worked as a fundamental creative impulse to reach a distinctly Danish look & feel in the design. Another essential source of inspiration was Skagen itself – the particular atmosphere attached to its cultural heritage and the distinctive landscape. Bindesbøll’s wooden buildings by the harbor, the hand-drawn names, and numbers on the fishing boats, the flat yet undulating landscape. Even the distinct shape of Skagen’s hook into the ocean itself became a source of inspiration in the creation of the Skagen typeface.
