Font formats

The standard format for Playtype fonts is OTF (PostScript). The OTF format is one of the most common formats today usable on Mac OS, Windows and Unix systems and has the widest availability and typographic flexibility for anybody working with desktop publishing software such as Adobe® Creative Suite® or QuarkXPress®.

Font Installation

When having completed your font purchase on Playtype.com, you are able to download your fonts directly from our server by clicking the button “Download your font”. You will then see the window which lets you save the puchased fonts as a .zip file named “Playtype-order-[your 16 digit order reference no.]” The file will be saved on your computer desktop or in the folder specified for downloaded files in your web browser’s preferences.

Installation on Mac OS X

When the font software has been succesfully downloaded to your computer, you can double click on the font file, and you will see the font in a seperate window. Press “Install font” and the font will automatically install in Font Book ready for use.

Installation on Windows 7 and newer

When the font software has been succesfully downloaded to your computer, you can double click on the font file, and you will see the font in a separate window. Press “install” and the font will automatically install in Font Book ready for use. The fonts will be saved under “Control Panel”, “Appearance and Themes” and then “Fonts.”

Hinting & Screen optimization

Playtype fonts are auto-hinted (as opposed to manually hinted). Hinting is a process that improves the font’s appearance on screen. Fonts that are not manually hinted are fully functional, but might display incorrectly when used in small sizes on a PC or screens with low screen resolutions. This is only a viewing error though, due to the lack of enough pixels to display the font correctly. Auto-hinted fonts are standard as hinting is a costly process.

Hinting must be targeted at specific needs. The most common level of hinting is hinting for ClearType which is basically a standard on Windows today. Playtype can provide full manual hinting or optimisation of single characters. The level of optimisation should be based on insights in user behaviour. If devices used to view the fonts generally are low resolution, hinting is particularly relevant. Contact us for a quote.

Note that screen resolutions are continuously improving, and the need for hinting could diminish over time as screens display of fonts gets improves.

Electronic receipt and font reacquisition

You can choose to view your receipt and licence confirmation directly on your screen after your purchase. We advise you to print the receipt with your order reference number from the screen in case you do not receive an email from us with your licence confirmation. It may take a few minutes for the email to arrive. If you have not received it within 24 hours, contact Playtype with your order reference number to obtain the mail with your licence details. The email also provides you with links to our Terms & Conditions, EULA and your purchased fonts in case you may need to reacquire your font due to accidental deletion or file corruption. To re-acquire the fonts, click the link, and you are able to save the .zip font file again. Do not forward the e-mail to others unless they have acquired a licence (see the EULA for information on licenses).

Software Restrictions

There are no inherent technical restrictions in the font software that limits embedding or installation of the fonts. This leaves you as the user with the responsibility of strictly using the fonts according to the licenses acquired.
